Borussia Dortmund face pivotal contract decision on Schlotterbeck
Borussia Dortmund are locked in crucial contract negotiations with defender Nico Schlotterbeck, with sporting managing director Lars Ricken outlining three potential outcomes for the German international's future. The 24-year-old's current deal expires in the summer of 2027, but the club is eager to secure his long-term commitment to ward off potential suitors.
In an interview with Sport Bild, Ricken laid out the stark options facing the club. "There are three options: we extend the contract, we sell him in the summer, or we go into the final year of the contract," Ricken stated. He was unequivocal about the club's least-preferred scenario, adding, "That wouldn't be good for us or for Nico."
The club's preference is a clear contract extension. Ricken expressed confidence in that outcome, stating, "We still assume that the first option will work out. I have always been optimistic about the talks." He has been directly involved in the discussions, recently holding a meeting with Schlotterbeck and the club's new sporting director, Ole Book, to advance the talks.
Despite the protracted nature of the talks, Ricken dismissed the idea of setting a firm deadline for a resolution, a tactic suggested by German legend Lothar Matthäus. "That might make sense in some cases, but not in this one," Ricken explained. "The talks are so respectful and confidential that we don't want to create artificial pressure... It's fine as it is – we have the situation under control."
Schlotterbeck, 24, has developed into a mainstay for both Dortmund and the German national team since his move from SC Freiburg in 2022. His consistent performances have made him a lynchpin of Dortmund's defense and a key component of the German national team setup ahead of the 2024 European Championship on home soil.
Ricken acknowledged the player's need for a thorough decision-making process. "I've had several conversations with Nico by now," he said. "I fully understand that he needs time to reflect on certain things. Given the contract situation and a player of his caliber, that's not unusual." The club is now in a delicate phase, balancing the desire to retain a key player with the financial and sporting reality that a sale this summer may become the only viable option if an extension cannot be agreed upon, to avoid the risk of losing him for a reduced fee or for free in the future.
