Borussia Dortmund are considering a move to re-sign Jadon Sancho, but are taking a cautious approach and setting firm financial parameters, according to a report in Bild. The 26-year-old winger, currently a free agent after a disappointing spell in the Premier League, is reportedly open to returning to the club where he first rose to prominence.
Sancho initially left Dortmund for Manchester United in 2021 for a reported fee of £73 million, but failed to consistently replicate his previous form at Old Trafford. A subsequent loan spell at Aston Villa also proved unsuccessful, leading to his return to Manchester United and eventual release. He scored three goals in 12 appearances for Aston Villa during his loan spell.
BVB officials, including Lars Ricken and Ole Book, have reportedly given the green light to pursue Sancho’s re-signing, but only under specific conditions. The club is prepared to offer Sancho a base salary of no more than €5 million per year, a significant reduction from his previous earnings in England. Furthermore, Dortmund are refusing to pay a signing bonus and are insisting on a contract heavily incentivized by performance-related bonuses.
Club scouts observed Sancho’s performances during his loan at Aston Villa in the spring, and internal discussions have led to a growing belief that the winger could recapture the form that made him a star in the Bundesliga. Dortmund’s sporting director, Ole Book, and club boss Lars Ricken have both been involved in assessing the feasibility of the transfer.
Sancho’s willingness to accept a pay cut is seen as a positive sign, potentially easing negotiations. The move would represent a chance for Sancho to rebuild his career in familiar surroundings and potentially reignite his stalled development. Should Sancho return to his previous level, Dortmund would add a dynamic attacking threat to their squad, bolstering their options in the Bundesliga and Champions League.
