Borussia Dortmund secure Champions League qualification with commanding win over Freiburg
Borussia Dortmund secured qualification for next season's Champions League with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over a heavily rotated SC Freiburg side on Sunday evening. The win, achieved in Dortmund's 1000th Bundesliga home game, mathematically guarantees a top-four finish with three league matches remaining. Goals from Maximilian Beier, Serhou Guirassy, Ramy Bensebaini, and Fabio Silva sealed the crucial result.
With Freiburg prioritizing their upcoming Europa League semi-final first leg against Braga on Thursday, coach Julian Schuster made seven changes to his starting lineup. The absence of key figures like Matthias Ginter, Yuito Suzuki, and Yohan Manzambi was immediately apparent as Dortmund dominated from the outset. Beier opened the scoring in the eighth minute, capitalizing on a long ball from Bensebaini to beat goalkeeper Noah Atubolu in a one-on-one.
The pressure continued unabated, and Guirassy doubled the lead just six minutes later. The goal originated from a driving run by 18-year-old debutant Samuele Inacio, who found Julian Brandt on the right. Brandt's cross was met by an unmarked Guirassy for his 15th league goal of the season. The Guinean striker's form has been a consistent positive in Dortmund's campaign. Bensebaini added a third just after the half-hour mark, powerfully heading home a Julian Ryerson corner to effectively end the contest before halftime.
Dortmund manager Niko Kovac praised his team's application in a post-match interview with Sportschau. "The team showed a great game for over 90 minutes today," Kovac said. "The manner in which we played pleased me." The result dispels any lingering doubts about Dortmund's Champions League status after two consecutive league defeats had threatened to reopen the race for the top four.
For Freiburg, the match served as a disjointed and unsuccessful rehearsal. Lukas Kübler had a second-half goal ruled out for offside, but the visitors rarely threatened Gregor Kobel's goal. Captain Christian Günter acknowledged the performance but emphasized the bigger picture. "We will not let this knock us down," Günter said. "We have extremely important weeks ahead of us, games where everything is at stake." Freiburg remains in seventh place, a position currently good enough for a Conference League qualifying spot.
The victory also marks Dortmund's 600th Bundesliga home win. With Champions League football secured, Kovac's immediate focus shifts to consolidating second place in the table. "We want to defend this position, for that we need points - and we will achieve that," the coach stated. Dortmund travels to face Borussia Mönchengladbach next Sunday. Freiburg, meanwhile, turns its full attention to the European semi-final in Portugal before hosting Wolfsburg in the league.
