Borussia Dortmund secure Champions League spot with commanding win over Freiburg
Borussia Dortmund mathematically secured qualification for next season's Champions League with a resounding 4-0 victory over a heavily rotated SC Freiburg side on Sunday. The win, which came in Dortmund's 1,000th home Bundesliga match, ensures they cannot be caught for a top-four finish. Goals from Maximilian Beier, Serhou Guirassy, Ramy Bensebaini, and Fabio Silva sealed the crucial points for Niko Kovac's team.
Freiburg, who were prioritizing their upcoming Europa League semi-final first leg against Braga on Thursday, made seven changes to their starting lineup. The absence of key figures like Matthias Ginter, Yuito Suzuki, and Yohan Manzambi was immediately apparent as Dortmund dominated from the outset. Beier opened the scoring in the 8th minute, capitalizing on a long ball from Bensebaini to beat goalkeeper Noah Atubolu one-on-one.
The pressure continued, and Dortmund doubled their lead just six minutes later. Eighteen-year-old Samuele Inacio, making his first start, drove forward before finding Julian Brandt, who delivered a cross for Guirassy to tap in for his 15th league goal of the season. Bensebaini then added a third just after the half-hour mark, powerfully heading in a Julian Ryerson corner to put the result beyond doubt before halftime.
Dortmund's performance was a strong response after suffering back-to-back league defeats, eliminating any lingering doubts about their Champions League status. Coach Niko Kovac praised his team's approach in a post-match interview with Sportschau, stating, "The team showed a great game today over 90 minutes. I liked the manner in which we operated."
Freiburg offered little in response, with a disallowed Lukas Kübler goal in the second half being their only notable moment in a match they managed as a preparation exercise. Freiburg coach Julian Schuster acknowledged the challenge, telling Sportschau, "The conditions today were demanding. But we are also self-critical enough to say: we have to defend that better." The result leaves Freiburg still fighting for seventh place, which would guarantee at least a Conference League qualifying spot.
The second half saw Dortmund comfortably manage their lead, with Bensebaini hitting the post and substitute Silva adding a late fourth goal in the 87th minute. The match also featured professional debuts for Dortmund's 16-year-old Mathis Albert and Freiburg's 18-year-old Rouven Tarnutzer. Dortmund now turn their focus to securing second place in the Bundesliga, with an away match at Borussia Mönchengladbach next, while Freiburg face Wolfsburg before their European return leg.
