Borussia Dortmund seal Champions League qualification with emphatic win over Freiburg
Borussia Dortmund secured qualification for next season's UEFA Champions League with a commanding 4-0 victory over a heavily-rotated SC Freiburg at Signal Iduna Park on Sunday. The result, achieved on the club's 1000th Bundesliga home game, guarantees a top-four finish and ends any lingering doubts after two consecutive league defeats. Goals from Maximilian Beier, Serhou Guirassy, Ramy Bensebaini, and a late Fabio Silva strike sealed a comprehensive win.
Freiburg, who face Braga in a Europa League semi-final first leg on Thursday, made seven changes from their previous cup lineup, resting key performers like Matthias Ginter, Yuito Suzuki, and Yohan Manzambi. The visitors' altered side struggled from the outset, according to match reports, with Dortmund exploiting defensive disorganization to establish a three-goal lead by halftime. Beier opened the scoring in the 8th minute, capitalizing on a long ball from Bensebaini, before Guirassy tapped home a Julian Brandt cross six minutes later.
Bensebaini added a third with a powerful header from a Julian Ryerson corner in the 32nd minute, effectively ending the contest before the interval. Dortmund manager Niko Kovac praised his team's application in a post-match interview with Sportschau, stating, "The team showed a great game today over 90 minutes. The manner in which we operated pleased me." The second half saw few clear chances, though Freiburg had a Lukas Kübler goal ruled out for offside and Bensebaini hit the post for Dortmund.
The match also featured notable debuts, with 18-year-old Samuele Inacio impressing in his first start for Dortmund before being substituted to a standing ovation. Freiburg's Julian Schuster acknowledged the difficult circumstances, telling Sportschau, "The conditions today were demanding. But we are also self-critical enough to say: we have to defend that better." His team remains in contention for a seventh-place finish, which would secure at least a UEFA Conference League qualifying spot.
For Dortmund, the focus now shifts to consolidating second place in the Bundesliga, with Kovac expressing confidence his side can defend the position. The victory also marked Dortmund's 600th Bundesliga home win. Freiburg captain Christian Gunter looked ahead, saying, "We will not let this throw us off. We have extremely important weeks ahead of us, games where everything is at stake." Dortmund travel to Borussia Monchengladbach next, while Freiburg host VfL Wolfsburg before their European return leg.
