Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea to Battle for Strasbourg's Diego Moreira
Borussia Dortmund have identified Strasbourg winger Diego Moreira as a summer transfer target, but face potential competition from the player's former club, Chelsea, who hold a buy-back option. According to Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg, Dortmund have placed the 21-year-old Belgian international on their shortlist ahead of the summer window. The 21-year-old, who can play on either wing or as a wing-back, has a contract with Strasbourg until 2029, but is expected to be available for a fee in the region of €30-40 million.
Moreira joined Strasbourg on a permanent deal from Chelsea in 2024 after a successful loan spell. Under the management of Gary O'Neil, he has established himself as a key starter, primarily on the right wing, contributing four goals and seven assists in all competitions this season. His performances have reportedly put him on the radar of several top clubs, with Dortmund now making their interest concrete.
Chelsea, however, are believed to hold a significant advantage in the race. The Premier League club, where Moreira began his professional career, is understood to have a favourable buy-back clause, giving them a significant say in the 21-year-old's future. This clause could allow them to pre-empt a move to a rival like Dortmund, though it is not currently known if the clause is optional or mandatory.
A return to Stamford Bridge could be an attractive option for Chelsea as they assess their attacking options. The indifferent form of Pedro Neto has been a point of discussion, and Moreira's proven versatility—he has also been deployed as a left wing-back and left winger—makes him a useful tactical asset. His ability to play on either flank or even as a wing-back provides the kind of tactical flexibility that Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior, who worked with Moreira at Strasbourg, is known to value.
For Dortmund, the 21-year-old represents the profile of a dynamic, young attacking player they have successfully developed in the past. His estimated market value, as reported by FootballTransfers, is currently around €16.5 million, but Strasbourg's asking price reflects his development and potential. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Dortmund's interest materializes into a formal bid, or if Chelsea will exercise their contractual advantage to bring the young Belgian back to London.
