Manchester United have announced the departure of Sir Dave Brailsford from his role as a director at Old Trafford, effective immediately.
The 62-year-old’s exit was confirmed by the club’s filing to Companies House, bringing an end to his formal involvement with the Red Devils since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s takeover via Ineos in February 2024.
Brailsford, head of sport for the Ineos group, initially scaled back his day-to-day duties at United a year ago but remained on the board. Despite stepping away from direct control, he played a significant role in the early stages of Ratcliffe’s project to rebuild the club.
The move does not signify a complete severance of ties, as Brailsford will continue to act as an advisor to Ratcliffe and maintain his position as director of sport at Ineos. This allows him to remain involved in the broader sporting vision of the Ineos empire, while relinquishing direct oversight at United.
Brailsford’s time at United coincided with a period of improvement for the club, as they have re-emerged as a competitive force in the Premier League. However, his precise impact has been difficult to quantify, with CEO Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox assuming more prominent roles in shaping the team.
He initiated the ‘Mission 21’ initiative, also known as Project 150, aimed at overhauling the performance culture at Manchester United. This included plans to modernize the Carrington training ground facilities, laying the groundwork for long-term success and aligning with Ratcliffe’s vision for a modernised club. The project was always intended as a long-term undertaking, focusing on establishing a sustainable foundation for future growth.
Ratcliffe will still have access to Brailsford’s expertise should he require advice, ensuring continuity in the overall strategic direction. The departure signals a further consolidation of power under the new leadership structure at Old Trafford, as Ratcliffe continues to implement his plans for the club.
