Julian Brandt will play his final match for Borussia Dortmund next week away to Werder Bremen, bringing an end to his seven-year spell with the club. The attacking midfielder captained Dortmund in their 3-2 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, marking his last appearance at Signal Iduna Park. Brandt is set to make his 307th appearance for Dortmund in the upcoming fixture against Bremen.
Speaking after the win over Frankfurt, Brandt revealed a personal connection to the upcoming match. He stated that much of his family and close friends reside in Bremen, adding an emotional layer to what will be his final game as a Dortmund player. Despite never having played for Werder Bremen previously, Brandt fondly recalled attending matches at the Weserstadion as a supporter, describing the situation as “a story you couldn’t have written more beautifully.”
Brandt reflected on the significance of playing his last home game for Dortmund, acknowledging the speed at which things change in football. He suggested the full weight of his time at the club would only be felt once it was over. The 30-year-old has been a consistent performer for Dortmund since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2018, contributing goals and assists in both the Bundesliga and European competitions.
While a move to Werder Bremen has been speculated, Brandt has not yet confirmed his next destination, though he did state a decision will be made before August. According to Brandt, he is considering options within the Bundesliga, and is focused on finishing the current season strongly with Dortmund. He won the DFB-Pokal with Dortmund in 2020/21, and has 20 senior international appearances for Germany.
Brandt’s departure leaves a void in Dortmund’s midfield, as the club looks to rebuild under their current management. His experience and versatility will be valuable assets for whichever team secures his signature, and his potential move to Werder Bremen could signal a significant addition to their squad.
