Brentford are on the verge of signing 1. FC Köln forward Said El Mala in a deal worth up to €50 million, according to reports in Germany. The transfer would represent a club-record sale for Köln and a significant investment in attacking talent for the Premier League side.
Negotiations between the two clubs have progressed rapidly, with Bild reporting that Köln’s managing director for sport, Thomas Kessler, is prepared to accept Brentford’s latest offer. The proposed fee is structured with a guaranteed €45 million payment to Köln, alongside potentially €5 million in achievable bonuses. Furthermore, Köln have negotiated a 15 percent sell-on clause, meaning they would receive a percentage of any future transfer fee should Brentford sell El Mala.
Final approval from the El Mala family and the Köln club board remains the only obstacle to completing the transfer. Should the deal go through, it will surpass the previous Köln record sale of Anthony Modeste to Tianjin Quanjian for approximately €35 million in 2018. El Mala’s emergence as a key player for Köln has dramatically increased his market value in recent months.
El Mala, 19, has quickly become a focal point in Köln’s attack since breaking into the first team. He has demonstrated a consistent ability to score and create chances, attracting interest from several clubs across Europe. Brentford have been particularly keen, identifying him as a player who can significantly enhance their attacking options. The Bees have been proactive in the transfer market, seeking to build on their established Premier League status.
Brentford’s pursuit of El Mala signals their ambition to compete at a higher level in the Premier League. The addition of a young, dynamic forward like El Mala would provide manager Thomas Frank with greater tactical flexibility and strengthen their attacking depth. For Köln, the substantial transfer fee will provide financial resources for future investment in the squad, though they will undoubtedly miss El Mala’s contributions on the pitch.
