Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey has publicly addressed speculation linking him with a summer move to Chelsea or Bayern Munich, insisting he has received no official contact from either club. The 24-year-old Netherlands international, who joined the Black Cats from Ajax for €20 million last summer, has attracted interest following a promising debut Premier League season.
Speaking to ViaPlay, as reported by the Sunderland Echo, Brobbey responded to the rumours. "It is always nice when such a big club shows interest, but I haven’t heard anything myself. So, I don’t know," he said. When specifically asked about the potential appeal of a move to Bayern Munich, the forward added, "I don’t know. I’m not thinking about that right now." His comments come amid reports from sources including Simon Phillips that Chelsea are monitoring him as they seek attacking reinforcements.
Brobbey has scored six goals in 27 league appearances for Sunderland this season, playing a key role in their push for European qualification following their return to the top flight. His physical presence and hold-up play have been highlighted as particular strengths. Despite an underwhelming final season at Ajax, his adaptation to English football has restored his reputation as a promising forward entering his prime years.
Chelsea's interest stems from a continued search for a reliable centre-forward. Although a deal for Strasbourg's Emmanuel Emegha is reportedly finalized, the club remains in the market for another option. Current striker Liam Delap has struggled, scoring just once this campaign. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich's need is also clear, with the Bundesliga side confirming they will not sign loanee Nicolas Jackson permanently at season's end.
Sunderland's position is firm, with Brobbey under contract until 2029. According to FootballTransfers, the club would demand a club-record fee in the region of €40 million to even consider a sale this summer. This significant valuation reflects his importance to Regis Le Bris's project and the three years remaining on his deal at the Stadium of Light.
The coming months will likely determine Brobbey's immediate future. A strong finish to the Premier League season, coupled with a potential impact for the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup, would only intensify the speculation. For now, the player's focus appears to remain on Sunderland, with any concrete moves dependent on formal offers meeting the club's high asking price.
