Nathaniel Brown has secured the starting left-back position for Germany ahead of David Raum, confirmed by manager Julian Nagelsmann on Saturday night, as the national team prepares to face Curaçao. The 22-year-old’s rise to prominence comes after a strong season with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he registered four goals and four assists in the Bundesliga. Brown started both of Germany’s recent friendlies, playing the full ninety minutes against Finland and sixty minutes against the United States, earning him a place in a largely experienced German squad.
Brown joined Eintracht Frankfurt in 2024 from 2. Bundesliga side 1. FC Nürnberg, quickly establishing himself as a key player for the club. His performances have drawn significant attention, with widespread reports suggesting he is nearing a transfer to Bayern Munich following the conclusion of the World Cup. This potential move comes amid concerns over the fitness of Bayern’s current first-choice left-back, Alphonso Davies, who recently missed a match for Canada with an injury.
Raum, previously expected to start for Germany, has 37 international caps and was a regular in the 2022 World Cup, starting all three of Germany’s group stage matches. He also began the knockout stage of the 2024 European Championship as a starter, having initially been a back-up option. However, Brown’s recent form has evidently impressed Nagelsmann, leading to the change in selection.
Germany’s match against Curaçao marks the beginning of Group E play for both teams, with Germany seeking their first opening-game win at a World Cup since their victorious campaign in 2014. A successful tournament for Brown could solidify his position as a key player for Germany and accelerate his anticipated move to Bayern Munich, potentially filling the void should Davies’ injury issues persist. The competition for the left-back role in the German national team appears to be decisively settled, at least for the time being.
