Olympique de Marseille have announced the appointment of Bruno Genesio as their new manager, with the club confirming a two-year contract for the former Lille coach on Wednesday. The move comes following the departure of Habib Beye and effectively ends a prolonged search for a new head coach at the Stade Vélodrome.
According to a club statement, Genesio “has established himself over the years as one of the most recognised French coaches” and was chosen for his experience, tactical knowledge, and ability to develop teams. Marseille’s general manager, Stéphane Richard, added that they were convinced by Genesio’s commitment to the club’s project and his desire to build for the future.
Genesio recently finished third in Ligue 1 with Lille, a strong performance that reportedly made him a prime candidate for several positions. He previously managed Rennes, leading them to a Coupe de France triumph in 2019 and establishing a reputation for attractive, attacking football. His time at Lille, despite the third-place finish, saw some inconsistency in the latter half of the season.
Marseille endured a turbulent end to the previous campaign, finishing mid-table and missing out on European qualification. The club will be hoping Genesio can restore stability and ambition, with the aim of challenging for Champions League places in the coming seasons. His first training session with the squad is scheduled for July 6th.
Genesio himself expressed his enthusiasm for the role, describing Marseille as a “unique club” with an “exceptional history” and passionate supporters. He acknowledged the club’s strong identity and stated his excitement at joining the Provençal outfit. This appointment signals a clear attempt by Marseille to bring in a coach with a proven track record in French football and a commitment to a long-term project.
