Burnley are reportedly interested in signing Kojo Peprah Oppong from OGC Nice, according to L’Équipe. The 22-year-old Ghanaian centre-back joined Nice last summer from Norrköping in Sweden for a fee of €2.7 million and quickly became a key player due to a series of injuries to other defenders in the squad.
Oppong made 40 appearances across all competitions for Nice in his debut season, exceeding initial expectations. His performances also earned him international recognition, culminating in two appearances for Ghana at the recent World Cup. This increased exposure has significantly raised his market value, and Nice could potentially sell him for between €10 and €15 million during the current transfer window.
Burnley, currently in the Championship, are facing competition from Turkish SüperLig side Trabzonspor, as well as an unnamed Ligue 1 club, for Oppong’s signature. While Nice would prefer to retain the player, who is under contract until 2029, the club faces financial pressures.
Nice officials are aiming to generate approximately €70 million through player sales and salary reductions to stabilize their finances. This substantial target may force them to consider offers for valuable assets like Oppong, despite his importance to the team. Director of Sport Roger Ricort has returned to the club with the task of achieving these savings within the next five weeks. A move to the Premier League with Burnley would present a significant step up in Oppong’s career, and potentially provide Nice with a substantial profit on their initial investment.
