Como goalkeeper Jean Butez has signed a new contract with the club that will keep him at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia until 2030, the club confirmed on Friday. The extension comes after a remarkable season for Butez, who conceded the fewest goals in Serie A and played a key role in Como’s historic qualification for the Champions League.
Butez expressed his delight at the renewal, stating it is a sign of trust and recognition for his work and the team’s achievements. He emphasized his happiness with life in Como and the stability the new contract provides for his family. The French goalkeeper joined Como in January 2023 and quickly established himself as a vital component of the team, contributing significantly to their unexpected success.
Despite his defensive role, Butez revealed a playful desire to play in midfield during training, enjoying experimenting with different positions. He recounted how he initially trialed for a midfield position at Lille as a youth player, but was ultimately directed to the goalkeeping role, a decision he now appreciates. He cited Manuel Neuer, Marc-André ter Stegen, and Ederson as goalkeeping influences, admiring their involvement in build-up play.
Butez also highlighted his close working relationship with manager Cesc Fabregas, emphasizing the freedom Fabregas gives him to make decisions regarding distribution – whether to play short or long – based on the game’s circumstances. He further explained that he actively communicates with his central defenders, providing information to help them make the best decisions regarding pressing or marking opponents. He credits Fabregas with fostering an environment of trust and allowing him to be himself on the pitch.
While Butez acknowledged being a pre-call up for the French national team, he stated he doesn’t actively pursue a call-up, but would be proud to represent his country. He named fellow countryman Mike Maignan as his pick for the best goalkeeper at the recent World Cup, alongside Joan García and Manuel Neuer. The contract extension secures a key player for Como as they prepare for their debut Champions League campaign and signals the club’s ambition to continue its upward trajectory.
