Hakan Calhanoglu will remain at Inter Milan for the 2024-25 season despite not renewing his contract, according to reports from Italy. The 31-year-old midfielder is set to return to training with the Nerazzurri following Turkey’s elimination from the recent World Cup, and will participate in the club’s upcoming pre-season tour of China and Australia.
Calhanoglu experienced a disappointing World Cup campaign with Turkey, marred by physical issues and ultimately ending in group stage elimination. Despite a victory over the United States, the result was insufficient to progress, leading to criticism of the player’s performance back in his home country. Inter are hoping for a different state of mind from Calhanoglu upon his return to Milan, with coach Christian Chivu keen to have him lead the midfield during his final year under contract.
The club is aware of Calhanoglu’s recent physical struggles, with injuries impacting his form towards the end of last season. However, they are not currently considering offering him a contract extension, viewing his departure at the end of the 2025-26 season as an acceptable outcome. This approach differs from Inter’s usual policy of avoiding player departures on free transfers.
There had been speculation linking Calhanoglu with a move back to Turkey, with Fenerbahce previously mentioned as a potential destination. However, this possibility appears to have diminished following a change in sponsorship at the Turkish club. As it stands, Inter have not received any compelling offers for the player, and intend to retain his services unless a significant bid emerges. Calhanoglu joined Inter in 2021 and has been a key player in their recent successes, including winning the Serie A title and Coppa Italia last season. His future beyond next season remains uncertain, but he will aim to finish his time in Milan strongly.
