Cantona Documentary and Feature Film to Premiere at Cannes Film Festival
A documentary and a feature film about and starring French football legend Eric Cantona have been selected for the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, according to the festival's official selection announcement. The films will premiere at the prestigious event in May, with Cantona himself expected to attend the festival. The documentary, simply titled 'Cantona', is directed by David Tryhorn and Ben Nicholas, the filmmakers behind documentaries about Pele and Luís Figo. Cantona is also set to star in a feature film, 'Les Matins merveilleux' (The Wonderful Mornings), directed by Avril Besson, where he will play the role of a wine merchant. The festival's general delegate, Thierry Frémaux, a noted sports enthusiast, announced the selections.
The documentary, 'Cantona', aims to provide a deep dive into the life and career of the enigmatic French forward, whose career included successful spells at Leeds United and Manchester United, where he became a Premier League icon. The film is expected to explore his life both on and off the pitch, from his time at Olympique de Marseille to his status as a cultural icon in England. The feature film, 'Les Matins merveilleux', will see Cantona in an acting role, a field where he has previous experience in films like 'Looking for Eric' by Ken Loach and 'Elizabeth'.
Cantona, who will turn 58 shortly after the festival, remains a towering and charismatic figure in the world of football and beyond. His career at Manchester United, where he won four Premier League titles, cemented his legendary status. His move from Leeds United to Manchester United in 1992 was a defining transfer of the Premier League era, and his impact on English football is still felt today. The Cannes selection committee's choice highlights the enduring global appeal of the Frenchman, long after his retirement from the sport in 1997.
The festival will also feature another football-centric film, 'El Partido', a documentary by Juan Cabral and Santiago Franco focusing on the legendary 1986 World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and England, famously defined by Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' and 'Goal of the Century'. The inclusion of these films underscores the deep cultural intersection between football and cinema. The dual selection of Cantona-related projects underscores his unique position as a sportsman who has successfully transitioned into an actor and artist, maintaining a prominent public profile long after his retirement from professional football. The festival runs from May 14 to May 25 in Cannes, France.
