Pierrick Capelle has announced his retirement from professional football following Angers’ 1-1 draw with Strasbourg, a result which secured their Ligue 1 status for another season. The midfielder played his final match at the Stade Raymond Kopa on Friday, providing an assist for Goduine Koyalipou before being substituted to a visibly emotional farewell.
Capelle departs Angers after 322 appearances for the club, a testament to his dedication and longevity. He was given a guard of honour by his teammates and family, and handed the captain’s armband to fellow long-serving player Abdoulaye Bamba, who is also set to retire. The club’s supporters displayed a banner thanking Capelle for a decade of service, calling him a “diamond”.
Speaking after the match, Capelle expressed his gratitude to the fans and his teammates, emphasizing the strong bonds forged through both success and adversity. He described his relationship with Bamba as one of brotherhood. Bamba reciprocated the sentiment, thanking Capelle for his support and acknowledging the club’s importance to both of them.
The match itself was overshadowed by the emotional farewells, though the point was crucial for Angers. They finished the season above the relegation zone, avoiding a drop to Ligue 2. Strasbourg, meanwhile, were already safe from relegation.
The evening was not without its setbacks, however, as Louis Mouton was forced off with an injury during the match. The extent of his injury is currently unknown. Capelle’s departure marks the end of an era for Angers, leaving a void in the midfield and a legacy of commitment and passion.
