Capello weighs in on Italy coach search, highlights Conte and Allegri
Former England and Russia manager Fabio Capello has identified Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri as the leading candidates to become the next head coach of the Italian national team. In an interview published on Monday, Capello analysed the potential suitability of the two high-profile club managers, both of whom are currently under contract with Serie A sides.
Capello, who has experience in international management, acknowledged the impressive trophy hauls of both men. Among active Italian coaches, only Carlo Ancelotti and Roberto Mancini have won more major honours. Allegri leads Serie A with six league titles, while Conte has five in Italy plus a Premier League crown with Chelsea. "They would be two great candidates," Capello said, according to the interview. However, he was quick to note the unique challenges of international management, describing it as "a very different job" compared to club football.
The ex-AC Milan and Juventus boss offered a comparative analysis of the two contenders. He suggested that Conte, currently at Napoli, would arrive with a clearer immediate understanding of the role's demands. In contrast, Capello characterised Allegri, the AC Milan manager, as a quicker learner and a more diplomatic and communicative figure. This assessment points to the different personalities and managerial styles that the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) would be choosing between.
The search for a new permanent Italy manager remains ongoing following Luciano Spalletti's departure after the 2024 European Championship. The FIGC is tasked with appointing a figure who can rebuild the national team after a period of transition and disappointment, including failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. While Conte and Allegri are the most discussed names, their existing contracts with Napoli and Milan respectively present significant financial and bureaucratic hurdles for the federation to overcome.
Beyond the individual coach, Capello emphasised a fundamental requirement for any successful tenure. He argued that for the national team to be reborn, it needs a strong core group of players who are regulars together at club level. This points to a desire for a cohesive unit, akin to the backbone provided by Juventus players during previous successful Azzurri cycles, rather than a team assembled from disparate parts.
The coming weeks are likely to see increased speculation as the FIGC formalises its shortlist. While the allure of Conte's intensity and Allegri's tactical acumen is clear, the final decision will hinge on more than just pedigree. The federation must consider not only the financial cost of extracting either man from his club but also whose vision and personality is best suited to fostering the strong, unified block Capello deems essential for Italy's revival.
