Manchester United have confirmed Atalanta midfielder Ederson as their first signing under newly appointed head coach Michael Carrick. The move was announced on Friday, signaling the start of Carrick’s reshaping of the United squad following his permanent appointment earlier in the day.
Details regarding the transfer fee have not been officially disclosed, though sources indicate United will pay in the region of €35 million for the Brazilian. Ederson has agreed a five-year contract with the club, keeping him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2031. The 24-year-old has impressed in Serie A with Atalanta, establishing himself as a key component in their midfield.
Ederson’s arrival addresses a clear need for United, with the midfield often appearing overrun in recent seasons. He provides a dynamic presence, known for his tackling, passing range, and ability to break up play. Last season, Ederson made 32 appearances for Atalanta across all competitions, contributing with two goals and three assists. He has also earned two caps for the Brazilian national team.
Carrick’s decision to target Ederson suggests a preference for a high-energy, pressing style of football. The player’s profile fits the mould of midfielders Carrick favoured during his playing career at United. The appointment of Carrick as permanent manager followed a successful interim period where he stabilised the team after a difficult start to the season.
This signing is expected to be the first of several as Carrick looks to rebuild the United squad. Other transfer business is also progressing, with Elliot Anderson reportedly reaching an agreement in principle to join Manchester City from Nottingham Forest. Chelsea have also made an offer to bring back Thiago Silva, while Arsenal are monitoring young American defender Noahkai Banks.
