Manchester United have confirmed that Michael Carrick will remain as the club’s first-team manager until 2028. The former midfielder has made an immediate impact since taking the reins, earning Premier League Manager of the Month for his performances in December after victories against Manchester City and Arsenal.
Under Carrick’s leadership, United secured qualification for the Champions League, winning 11 of his first 16 matches – a record that represented the best form in the league during that period. The appointment signals a shift in direction for the club, prioritizing continuity after a period of frequent managerial changes.
Carrick enjoyed a distinguished playing career at Old Trafford, making 464 appearances and winning five Premier League titles, a Champions League, an Europa League, an FA Cup, two League Cups, and the FIFA Club World Cup. His deep understanding of the club’s history and culture was cited as a key factor in the decision to offer him a long-term contract.
“From the moment I arrived here twenty years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United,” Carrick stated following the announcement. “To have the responsibility of leading our special club fills me with immense pride. Over the last five months, this group of players has shown the potential to reach the standards of resilience, unity, and determination that we demand here. Now it’s time to move forward together, with ambition and a clear objective.”
Club director Jason Wilcox added that Carrick “fully deserves the opportunity to continue leading our team,” praising his positive impact on the pitch and his alignment with the club’s values. Wilcox highlighted Carrick’s success in securing Champions League football as a significant achievement, noting the strong connection he has forged with the players and the positive culture he is building at the Carrington training ground.
The club is now turning its attention to the transfer market, with Atalanta’s Ederson and AC Milan’s Rafael Leão reportedly among the targets as Carrick looks to strengthen the squad ahead of the Champions League campaign.
