Real Madrid are undergoing significant changes ahead of a crucial summer, with presidential elections scheduled for June 7 and the anticipated return of Jose Mourinho as head coach. The club is expected to be active in the transfer market following two trophyless seasons.
Dani Carvajal has officially departed the Santiago Bernabéu after more than a decade of service, leaving as captain. The right-back made 451 appearances for Madrid since rejoining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2013, winning four La Liga titles and six Champions League trophies. His exit follows the signing of Trent Alexander-Arnold last summer, signaling a shift in the squad’s defensive options. Carvajal has indicated he does not plan to retire immediately, but will take time to consider his next move.
Defender David Alaba has also been released by the club after five years in Spain. Despite making 132 appearances, Alaba’s time at Madrid was hampered by injuries. He has been included in Austria’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, but his future at club level remains uncertain.
Should Florentino Perez win re-election as president, the appointment of Mourinho is expected to be formalized, alongside the free transfer of Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool. If Enrique Riquelme wins, he has pledged to appoint club legend Raul as sporting director. Regardless of who wins, Madrid are expected to seek a replacement for Carvajal at right-back and a midfielder with the qualities of Luka Modric or Toni Kroos.
The club holds a buy-back clause for Nico Paz, currently at Como, and may activate it, though they also have the option to delay the purchase until 2027. Potential departures include Dani Ceballos and Gonzalo Garcia, potentially to accommodate the reintegration of Endrick from his loan spell at Lyon.
Recent reports suggest Real Madrid have also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur’s Pedro Porro, following a request from Mourinho, and are considering a move for the player. They are also reportedly in contact regarding a potential move for a Dutch star following Arne Slot’s departure from Liverpool.
