Santiago Castañeda played a pivotal role as SC Paderborn 07 secured promotion to the Bundesliga with a 2-1 aggregate victory over VfL Wolfsburg in the promotion play-off.
The American midfielder started both legs of the tie, playing all 210 minutes as Paderborn returned to the top flight after a one-year absence.
Castañeda joined Paderborn in 2024 on a free transfer from MSV Duisburg, quickly establishing himself as a key component of the team. In his first season, he made 32 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga, and this year started 27 games, contributing significantly to Paderborn’s third-place finish and subsequent play-off berth.
His performance in the play-off was particularly noteworthy, nearly scoring in the first leg and demonstrating consistent energy and influence over both matches. Paderborn ultimately prevailed in extra time, earning their place back in the Bundesliga.
Castañeda’s journey to this point has been rapid; just two years ago, he was playing in Germany’s third tier after arriving from the USL’s Tampa Bay Rowdies at age 18. His rise reflects a growing trend of American players making an impact in European football.
He is set to join a burgeoning contingent of Americans in the Bundesliga, following in the footsteps of players like Malik Tillman, Gio Reyna, and Joe Scally, eleven of whom featured in the league last season. VfL Wolfsburg also featured an American in Kevin Paredes, who came on as a substitute during the play-off but could not prevent his side’s relegation.
This promotion for Paderborn and Castañeda represents a significant step forward for both player and club, offering a platform for further development in a competitive league.
