Sunderland are considering a summer move for Schalke midfielder Soufiane El-Faouzi, with Celtic also heavily interested in the 23-year-old, according to sources at TEAMtalk. The Scottish champions view El-Faouzi as a potential long-term replacement for Callum McGregor, who has been a mainstay in the Celtic midfield for twelve years, making 574 appearances for the club.
El-Faouzi has impressed in his performances for Schalke following their promotion back to the Bundesliga, demonstrating both technical ability and leadership qualities in central midfield. He signed a contract with Schalke until 2029, but the club's financial situation could make them receptive to a significant offer.
Sunderland, after a successful return to the Premier League, are also monitoring the situation closely, alongside Brentford, who see El-Faouzi as a versatile addition to their squad. Both English clubs are reportedly prepared to meet Schalke’s valuation, which is believed to be €12.5m (£10.1m, $13.5m).
Interest extends beyond the British Isles, with Italian side Bologna and French club Stade Rennais also expressing admiration for the German-Moroccan player. Bologna appreciate his tactical awareness, while Rennes see him as a dynamic addition to their young squad. While El-Faouzi has not publicly commented on his future, sources suggest he is open to considering new opportunities. Schalke will be keen to retain a key player, but a bidding war appears increasingly likely as the transfer window approaches.
