Chelsea are prepared to sell midfielder Enzo Fernandez to Real Madrid for a fee of £120 million, according to reports. The Argentine international, who appeared to bid farewell to Chelsea supporters following their final-day defeat to Sunderland, is reportedly seeking a move away from Stamford Bridge after the club failed to qualify for European competition.
TalkSPORT reports that Fernandez is dismayed by the lack of European football and desires a new challenge. While Manchester City were previously linked, their focus has shifted to Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest, leaving Real Madrid as the most likely destination. Fernandez’s agent, Javier Pastore, has already made contact with the Spanish club, and the player is said to be receptive to a move to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Chelsea are keen to resolve Fernandez’s future swiftly to avoid disrupting the early stages of new manager Xabi Alonso’s tenure. The club will reportedly accept any offer matching their £120 million valuation. Fernandez publicly expressed admiration for Real Madrid earlier in the year, suggesting a willingness to join the Spanish giants.
Fernandez joined Chelsea in January 2023 from Benfica for a fee of £106.8 million, becoming the club’s most expensive signing at the time. He quickly established himself as a key player in midfield, showcasing his passing range and defensive work rate. Last season was arguably his most impactful since arriving in London, despite the team’s overall struggles. A move to Real Madrid would reunite him with a club consistently competing at the highest level of European football, and potentially offer him the platform to further enhance his reputation. Should the transfer materialize, it would represent both a club-record sale for Chelsea and a significant investment for Real Madrid in a key position.
This sale could allow Alonso to reshape the Chelsea midfield to his liking, and provide funds for further recruitment during the summer transfer window.
