Chelsea boss Rosenior requests summer move for Sporting's Inacio
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has reportedly requested the club's hierarchy pursue a summer transfer for Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio. According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Rosenior has identified the 24-year-old Portuguese international as a key target to bolster his defensive options ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
The left-footed centre-back has been consistently linked with a move to the Premier League for several seasons. Inacio signed a new five-year contract with Sporting only in December, but that deal is understood to include a release clause valued at €60 million. Negotiations over a potential move are expected to intensify in the coming weeks, as per the report.
Rosenior's request comes amid expected defensive changes at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea currently have several central defenders on their books, but Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi – who is on loan at West Ham United – and Tosin Adarabioyo have all been tipped for potential permanent departures. This would create space and a need for a new, high-calibre addition in the heart of the defence.
Inacio would provide direct competition for fellow left-footer Levi Colwill. The defender is a product of Sporting's academy and has already amassed over 250 senior appearances for his boyhood club, including 40 this season where he has scored two goals. Despite playing in Portugal, he brings significant European experience from the Champions League and Europa League, as well as 19 caps for his national team.
The pursuit aligns with recent comments from Rosenior hinting at a slight shift in Chelsea's transfer strategy. Speaking to reporters in early April, the Blues boss emphasized a focus on character and emotional stability in future recruits. Following a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, he also confirmed detailed conversations were ongoing about the profile of player needed to improve the squad physically, technically, and tactically for the summer window.
While Chelsea's ownership, BlueCo, has prioritized signing talented youngsters since its 2022 takeover, Inacio represents a player with substantial first-team maturity despite his age. Securing his signature would be a significant statement of intent from Rosenior as he moulds the squad to his vision, addressing a key area that has been inconsistent this season.
