Co-owner Behdad Eghbali indicated in April the need for a more balanced squad, and these moves suggest a willingness to add experience and leadership to a young Chelsea team. The Blues received a total of 11 red cards across all competitions during the 2025-26 season, a statistic that new manager Xabi Alonso is keen to address.
Welbeck, 35, has made over 525 career appearances and scored 13 Premier League goals for Brighton last season, his most prolific top-flight campaign to date. He has proven to be a consistent threat against Chelsea throughout his career, scoring seven goals in 19 league games against the club. His first goal against Chelsea came while on loan at Sunderland in 2010, with Jordan Henderson also featuring in that match.
After a period impacted by injuries during his time with Manchester United and Arsenal, Welbeck rediscovered his form with Brighton, scoring in both matches at Stamford Bridge in 2021 and 2023. He also found the net in a 3-0 win for Brighton over Chelsea in February 2025, and again in a 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge last season. By signing Welbeck, Chelsea are acquiring a proven goalscorer with considerable longevity and, notably, removing a player who has consistently caused them problems on the pitch. Henderson, 36, brings over 694 career appearances and a wealth of experience to the Chelsea midfield.
