Chelsea consider Sunderland's Roefs as Sanchez faces uncertain future

The interest comes amid inconsistent form from Sanchez. The 28-year-old Spanish international kept a clean sheet in Chelsea's recent FA Cup win over Port Vale but was at fault for goals in a 3-0 Premier League defeat to Everton prior to that. Under manager Liam Rosenior, the club's hierarchy is now evaluating the goalkeeping position ahead of the summer transfer window.
Robin Roefs has been a standout performer for Sunderland this season, a key factor in their 11th-place position. In 28 Premier League appearances, he has conceded only 34 goals and kept eight clean sheets, earning plaudits for his shot-stopping ability. The club reportedly sees 20-year-old Mike Penders, currently on loan at Strasbourg, as a viable alternative. The Belgian goalkeeper, who worked under Rosenior during the manager's time in France, has kept eight clean sheets in 27 Ligue 1 appearances this term. Chelsea's head of global goalkeeping, Ben Roberts, is a known advocate for Penders and is believed to support promoting him to the first-team squad.
Sources indicate Chelsea have already consulted Rosenior about integrating Penders, receiving positive feedback. Furthermore, the club recently rejected enquiries from Tottenham Hotspur for the young goalkeeper, signalling a clear intention to keep him. This internal option complicates the pursuit of Roefs, making a £60 million outlay seem less likely for Chelsea at this stage.
