Chelsea agree six-year deal with Strasbourg's Valentin Barco
Chelsea have reached a full agreement to sign midfielder Valentin Barco from Strasbourg on a six-year contract this summer, according to multiple reports. The 21-year-old Argentina international has accepted personal terms and is set to become one of the first major signings of the Liam Rosenior era at Stamford Bridge.
Reports from Spain, including AS reporter Andres Onrubia Ramos, indicate that Chelsea's hierarchy have promised Barco he will be a "cornerstone of the project" to convince him to make the move. The presence of Rosenior, who coached Barco at Strasbourg and converted him from a left-back into a central midfielder, is said to have been a key factor in the player's decision.
Barco joined Strasbourg from Brighton & Hove Albion and has enjoyed a breakout season in Ligue 1, registering two goals and nine assists in 38 appearances across all competitions. His form earned him a senior Argentina debut last year, and he scored his first international goal in a 5-0 win over Zambia last week, strengthening his case for a place in the squad for the upcoming World Cup.
The move comes at a time of uncertainty in Chelsea's midfield, with Enzo Fernandez's future at the club in doubt following recent comments about Real Madrid. Barco will join a crowded group of midfield options including Moises Caicedo, Andrey Santos, and Romeo Lavia, but the club's assurances suggest he is being earmarked for significant playing time.
Barco is a product of the famed Boca Juniors academy in Argentina and moved to Europe with Brighton in 2024 before his subsequent transfer to Strasbourg. His tactical flexibility and technical ability, honed under Rosenior's guidance in France, have made him a prime target for Chelsea's new project.
If completed, Barco will be the fifth new arrival at Chelsea this summer, following the confirmed signings of Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha, Denner, and Dastan Satpaev. The deal underscores Chelsea's continued strategy of investing in young talent with high resale value and potential for development.
The transfer is expected to be officially confirmed in the coming weeks, with Barco likely to join the squad for pre-season training. His arrival signals Rosenior's intent to build his Chelsea team around dynamic, technically gifted midfielders capable of contributing in both phases of the game.
