Chelsea have initiated discussions with Xabi Alonso regarding the possibility of the former Real Madrid manager becoming their next permanent head coach, according to TEAMtalk. While Alonso is a key target, the club is also considering seven other candidates as part of an accelerated managerial search.
Alonso has been without a club since leaving Real Madrid mid-season, but sources indicate he is actively seeking a return to management this summer. He was previously linked with a return to Liverpool, where he enjoyed a successful playing career, and remains admired by figures at Anfield as they evaluate Arne Slot’s position, though Liverpool currently anticipate continuing with Slot.
Chelsea’s sporting leadership group reportedly believe Alonso would be an excellent fit for the club’s long-term vision, recruitment strategy, and preferred style of play. Initial conversations between the two parties are said to have been positive, with Chelsea impressed by Alonso’s ideas and vision for squad development.
Alongside Alonso, Chelsea are also exploring other options. Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann is considered a ‘dream appointment’ but appears difficult to prise away from the national team. Matthias Jaissle, currently managing in Saudi Arabia, is also highly regarded and has been described internally as “the new Nagelsmann” due to his tactical flexibility.
Former Chelsea players Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis are also under consideration, alongside Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, both of whom are expected to be available this summer. Fulham manager Marco Silva is another candidate admired by influential figures at Stamford Bridge. Despite the extensive shortlist, Alonso has reportedly made a strong early impression, and Chelsea believe his profile aligns with their desired direction.
Chelsea’s hierarchy value Alonso’s track record of developing young players, implementing an attractive style of play, and handling pressure at elite clubs. No final decision has been made, but Alonso is now firmly established as one of the leading contenders in the search for their next manager.
