Chelsea Lead Race for Teenage Defender Coulibaly as Fernandez Seeks Exit
Chelsea have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Werder Bremen's highly-rated teenage defender Karim Coulibaly, according to Sky Germany. The 18-year-old centre-back, a Germany youth international, is expected to leave the Bundesliga club this summer, with Chelsea showing the most concrete interest. Bremen are believed to be seeking a fee in the region of €40-50 million for the 18-year-old, who is also reportedly a target for several other top European clubs. The young defender, who is fluent in French, has been extensively scouted and is considered one of Europe's most promising defensive prospects.
In a significant development, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has reportedly decided to hand in a formal transfer request. According to Spanish outlet El Chiringuito, the Argentine World Cup winner is keen to force a move to Real Madrid this summer. The report suggests Fernandez has grown frustrated at Stamford Bridge and is pushing for a move to the Spanish capital, though Real Madrid are currently unwilling to meet Chelsea's valuation of the player. Fernandez is said to be prepared to force the issue by submitting a formal transfer request to the Chelsea hierarchy to try and push the move through.
Chelsea are also exploring a move for a new striker, with the club making contact with the representatives of Darwin Nunez, currently at Al-Hilal. According to TEAMtalk, the Blues have initiated talks over a potential move for the Uruguayan, who is seeking a return to European football after being de-registered from the Saudi Pro League side. The potential move for Nunez is part of a broader strategy that could see young striker Liam Delap sold if the right offer arrives, with the club reportedly open to offers for the 21-year-old.
In other transfer activity, Chelsea have reportedly promised Argentinian midfielder Valentin Barco a key role in the club's future. According to Spanish journalist Andres Onrubia, the 21-year-old, currently at Strasbourg, has agreed personal terms with Chelsea and is seen as a potential replacement for his compatriot, Enzo Fernandez. The club has assured Barco he would be a cornerstone of the project under the new manager, with the deal expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
In a separate development, Chelsea could be set for a reunion with former winger Diego Moreira. The Belgian winger, who left Stamford Bridge for Strasbourg, has impressed in Ligue 1 and is now attracting interest from Borussia Dortmund. However, Chelsea are believed to hold a favourable buy-back clause for the 20-year-old, which could see him return to the club this summer for a fee significantly below his current market value, which is estimated to be around €40 million.
