Chelsea Enter Race for Werder Bremen's Karim Coulibaly
Chelsea have entered the race to sign Werder Bremen's highly-rated young defender Karim Coulibaly, according to reports. The 18-year-old centre-back is expected to leave the Bundesliga club this summer, with a host of top European clubs, including Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain, also monitoring the player. Sky Sport Deutschland reports that Chelsea are now among the clubs with a serious interest in the player, who is considered one of the most promising defensive talents in Europe.
According to Sky's Florian Plettenberg, a summer move for Coulibaly is "100%" planned, with Werder Bremen hoping for a fee in the region of €40-50 million. The 18-year-old has made a significant impact in the Bundesliga this season, with his performances earning him the label of a "rare gem" by scouts. Chelsea's interest signals a potential shift in their recruitment strategy, with manager Liam Rosenior and the club's hierarchy looking to bolster their defensive options with top young talent.
In other transfer news at Stamford Bridge, the club has reportedly moved to resolve a potential rift with vice-captain Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine midfielder had been internally suspended for comments made about a potential move to Real Madrid. However, his agent, Javier Pastore, confirmed to French outlet Top Mercato that the situation has been resolved. Pastore stated that Fernandez had apologized to the club, his teammates, and the manager, and that "peace" had been restored between the player and the club hierarchy. Fernandez is expected to be available for selection again shortly.
Chelsea are also reported to have rekindled their interest in Barcelona's Marc Casado. The 22-year-old midfielder has been a long-term target for the Blues, who are said to be ready to accelerate a move amid the uncertainty surrounding Fernandez's long-term future at the club. Spanish outlet Fichajes suggests a fee of around €26 million could be enough to secure the services of the Spanish midfielder, as Barcelona may be forced to sell to fund their own transfer plans, including a move for Manchester City's Julian Alvarez.
Internally, the club has moved to reassure senior players about their transfer policy. Following public and private criticism from senior players, including defender Marc Cucurella, about a perceived lack of experience in the squad, the club has promised a shift in strategy. According to the BBC, Chelsea have assured captain Reece James and others that the summer transfer window will prioritize experienced signings in central defence, midfield, and attack. This marks a potential shift from the club's recent focus on signing younger, high-potential players.
Meanwhile, the club has no plans to sell young defender Josh Acheampong, despite his recent absence from the starting lineup. The 19-year-old right-back was surprisingly left out of the FA Cup squad to face Port Vale, sparking speculation about his future. However, the club remains adamant that Acheampong is part of their long-term plans, even as they continue to scout for a new right-sided centre-back, a position that could provide the 19-year-old with a clear pathway to the first team in the coming seasons.
