Chelsea have announced that academy defender Justin Osagie has signed a new contract with the club, extending his stay at Stamford Bridge until 2029. The 20-year-old joined the Blues on a free transfer in October after departing Peterborough United, and the new deal reflects his positive impact within the club’s youth setup.
Osagie made 11 appearances for Chelsea’s youth teams last season, featuring seven times in Premier League 2. Prior to his move to west London, the centre-back had spells with Southend United, West Ham United, and Celtic, before a year at Peterborough. During his time with the Posh, he had a loan spell at Peterborough Sports in the National League North, making three appearances, but did not break into the first team.
The contract extension comes after what Chelsea described as an “encouraging debut season” for Osagie. In a statement released on the club’s website, Chelsea highlighted his quick integration into the Under-21s squad and his contributions in Premier League 2, the EFL Trophy, and the Premier League International Cup. The club congratulated Osagie on securing his future with the Blues.
Chelsea’s academy is currently experiencing a period of potential player movement, with several other Under-21 stars potentially heading out on loan this summer. Jesse Derry, who has attracted interest from clubs like Coventry City, and Shumaira Mheuka, the Premier League 2 Player of the Season, are both expected to seek first-team experience elsewhere. Right-back Genesis Antwi and fellow centre-back Harrison Murray-Campbell are also in contention for loan spells to further their development. Osagie’s new contract suggests he is viewed as a potential future first-team player, while these loan moves aim to provide valuable playing time for the club’s promising young talents.
This contract renewal signifies Chelsea’s commitment to nurturing young talent and integrating academy players into the first team, a strategy that has become increasingly important for the club in recent years.
