Chelsea have held discussions with representatives of Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, according to reports from Blues reporter Si Phillips. This comes as Bayern Munich have presented Gordon with a ‘concrete’ offer, including a potential five-year contract.
Gordon has been linked with a move away from Newcastle since his transfer to St James’ Park, and a departure appears increasingly likely this summer, particularly with the club facing a season without European football and needing to balance their finances. Newcastle reportedly view Gordon as more expendable than key players such as Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.
While Bayern Munich currently appear to be leading the chase, Chelsea’s interest has been consistent, dating back to when a move was close in 2022. Phillips reports that Gordon is ‘likely to move’ this summer, with a number of clubs expressing interest, including Barcelona. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also stated that Gordon has ‘serious chances to leave’ Newcastle in the current window.
Bayern Munich are seeking to strengthen their wide attacking options and were previously urged to pursue Marcus Rashford, currently on loan at Barcelona, as an alternative. However, they have now made a formal offer to Gordon, though reaching an agreement with Newcastle remains the primary obstacle. German journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Bayern have presented Gordon’s camp with concrete figures, but have ‘clear limits’ to how much they are willing to pay. The Bundesliga club are also reportedly in talks with other potential candidates.
Gordon has shown flashes of potential since joining Newcastle, but has not yet fully established himself as a consistent starter. A move to Chelsea or Bayern would provide him with a platform to further develop his game and compete at the highest level. The competition for his signature suggests he is highly regarded in the European transfer market.
