Chelsea have initiated discussions with Rayo Vallecano regarding a potential transfer for left-back Pep Chavarria, according to reports from Spanish outlet Marca. This move comes following the sale of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, prompting the Blues to seek a new backup option in that position.
The departure of Cucurella was facilitated by the presence of Jorrel Hato within the Chelsea squad, providing cover at left-back. However, the club are now actively pursuing additional reinforcement ahead of the 2026-27 season. While Marco Palestra is expected to join and offer versatility across both full-back roles, Chelsea are considering a specialist left-back to add depth.
Chavarria has been a consistent performer for Rayo Vallecano since joining the club in 2022, accumulating 125 appearances. His Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently stands at €11.1 million, and Chelsea are weighing up a formal bid following his impressive form during the 2025-26 campaign. The club are aware of interest from other suitors and may need to move quickly to secure his signature.
Chelsea’s transfer business extends beyond the potential arrival of Chavarria. They are nearing the completion of a deal for Atalanta’s Palestra and are also heavily linked with Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix, valued at around €55 million. Furthermore, new manager Alonso is reportedly keen on reuniting with Granit Xhaka, currently at Sunderland, although a fee has yet to be agreed. Personal terms with Xhaka are already said to be in place.
Other players Chelsea have pre-agreed deals with include Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha, Dastan Satpaev, and Denner. Valentino Barco is also expected to arrive from Strasbourg. A move for former player Lewis Hall has also been considered, but Manchester United are also showing strong interest, potentially complicating any return to Stamford Bridge. The pursuit of Sunderland’s Morgan Rogers is ongoing, though Arsenal are currently leading the race for his signature.
The potential addition of Chavarria would provide valuable competition and depth to Chelsea’s defensive options, particularly given the demands of multiple competitions. Securing a reliable backup for Hato could prove crucial as the club aims to challenge on all fronts.
