Chelsea are reportedly considering a move for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, following a difficult period for the 30-year-old both domestically and internationally. The France international has been linked with a move to the Premier League as he assesses his future at the San Siro.
Maignan endured a disappointing end to the 2025/26 Serie A season with Milan, as the club suffered a late collapse and missed out on Champions League qualification, ultimately dropping into the Europa League. This led to significant changes at the club, including the dismissal of manager Massimiliano Allegri and a restructuring of the sporting leadership. Maignan had recently signed a contract extension with Milan anticipating Champions League football, and is reportedly unhappy with the managerial change.
The goalkeeper’s form also came under scrutiny during France’s opening match of the 2026 World Cup against Senegal, despite a 3-1 victory. He conceded a late goal to Ibrahim Mbaye, and faced criticism in the French press for his performance and perceived lack of confidence, with 1998 World Cup winner Christophe Dugarry commenting on his composure.
Chelsea previously expressed interest in Maignan last year, but were put off by Milan’s valuation. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Maignan’s agent is now exploring options in the Premier League, with Chelsea emerging as a potential destination. Tottenham Hotspur have also been mentioned as a possible suitor, following the appointment of Roberto de Zerbi, but neither club can currently offer Champions League football. Milan are still hoping to retain Maignan, but the player’s future remains uncertain. A final decision is not expected to be made imminently due to his involvement in the World Cup.
Should Maignan move to Stamford Bridge, it would address a perceived need for Chelsea in the goalkeeping position, while offering the player a fresh start after a challenging period. A change of scenery could potentially allow Maignan to rediscover his best form.
