Chelsea have submitted an offer to Thiago Silva to join their coaching staff this summer, following his recent departure from FC Porto, according to ESPN Brazil reporter Bruno Andrade. The 41-year-old Brazil legend previously spent four years as a player at Stamford Bridge from 2020 to 2024, playing a key role in their 2021 Champions League triumph under Thomas Tuchel.
Silva left Chelsea upon the expiration of his contract after Mauricio Pochettino’s single season in charge. After an 18-month spell with Fluminense, he moved to Porto on a free transfer in January, making 14 appearances for Francesco Farioli’s side and helping them secure the Portuguese top flight title – their first since 2022. Porto offered Silva a contract extension, but he reportedly rejected the opportunity to remain with the club.
While AC Milan have also expressed interest in bringing Silva back to San Siro, Chelsea are prioritizing a coaching role for the veteran defender, rather than a playing one. The offer reportedly centres around Silva initially working with the club’s academy, with a pathway towards a future role with the first team.
Silva already possesses a UEFA B coaching license, and his family remain based in London, a factor that could make a return to Chelsea particularly appealing. His son, Isago, currently plays for Chelsea’s U18 side. Chelsea’s defensive options have been a point of focus this summer, and Silva’s experience could be beneficial to younger players like Jorrel Hato, Wesley Fofana, and Levi Colwill, potentially aiding their development in defensive positioning and overall game understanding. His presence could also raise standards in training.
