Chelsea are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson, marking a shift in transfer strategy under manager Xabi Alonso. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Chelsea are leading the race for the 36-year-old, despite interest from other Premier League clubs.
Brentford are prepared to allow Henderson to leave on a free transfer, even though he has less than 12 months remaining on his current contract. Henderson joined Brentford last summer following a short spell at Ajax, signing a two-year deal with the club. At the time, the former Liverpool captain expressed his belief that he could continue to improve despite his age.
Last season, Henderson made 34 appearances for Brentford, scoring one goal. He also recently suffered a broken wrist during England’s celebrations after their victory over Mexico at the World Cup this summer, leaving him currently sidelined. His arrival at Stamford Bridge would represent a departure from the recent policy of Chelsea’s ownership group, BlueCo, who have largely focused on acquiring young talent.
Chelsea previously expressed interest in Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, 33, but were unsuccessful in their pursuit. The potential signing of Henderson, alongside reported interest in Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, 35, suggests a change in approach, potentially seeking experienced players to complement the existing squad. The sale of Andrey Santos to Manchester United for up to £50 million earlier this summer may have created space in the squad and budget for such moves. This shift could provide short-term stability and leadership as Alonso rebuilds the Chelsea squad.
