Chelsea have firmly rejected the possibility of selling forward Joao Pedro to Barcelona this summer, even if a world-record bid is received, according to transfer reporter Ben Jacobs. The 24-year-old has impressed during his debut season at Stamford Bridge, scoring 20 goals in all competitions and attracting attention from the Catalan club as they seek a replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
Barcelona are actively searching for a new centre forward ahead of the 2026-27 season, following Lewandowski’s confirmation of his departure on a free transfer in July. Joao Pedro emerged as an alternative target to Julian Alvarez, but Chelsea are resolute in their decision to retain the Brazilian international. He currently has seven years remaining on his contract with the Blues.
Joao Pedro was notably omitted from the Brazil squad for the 2026 World Cup, meaning he will be available for Chelsea’s entire pre-season campaign under new manager Xabi Alonso. The club have already secured a deal to bring in Strasbourg striker Emmanuel Emegha, but anticipate that Pedro will remain their primary central attacking option. Jacobs stated on X (formerly Twitter) that “There is no price that will change the club’s stance this summer, even a world-record bid.”
The current world transfer record is held by Neymar, who moved from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for €222 million. Chelsea’s firm stance is being viewed positively, representing a strategic decision from the club’s ownership group, BlueCo, who have faced criticism for previous transfer dealings. Pedro is considered one of the more successful signings made by the club in recent seasons, and Alonso is expected to build his attack around the forward as Chelsea aim to return to Champions League qualification. His availability throughout pre-season, alongside Cole Palmer, will be a significant benefit for the new manager as he integrates his playing style.
