Chelsea suspend Enzo Fernández after agent disputes 'unjust' punishment
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández has been handed a two-match suspension by his club following comments he made about a potential future in Madrid. The suspension, confirmed by the club, will see the Argentine international miss the FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale and the Premier League clash with Manchester City.
Fernández's agent, Javier Pastore, has strongly contested the punishment, calling it "totally unjust" and claiming it has "no valid reason or justification." According to Pastore, his client never mentioned a specific club, in reference to reported interest from Real Madrid, nor suggested he wanted to leave Chelsea. "It is pure media speculation," Pastore stated.
The 23-year-old World Cup winner has been a staple in Chelsea's midfield this season, wearing the captain's armband on 17 occasions. Despite this status, head coach Liam Rosenior has omitted him from the squad for the upcoming fixtures. Fernández is under a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge until 2032, and Pastore revealed that extension talks were held earlier this year, though they did not reach a conclusion.
Pastore suggested the club's action was a deliberate message. "This incomprehensible sanction suggests the club is trying to send a message. I suppose we will understand better later," he said. He also conveyed that Fernández wishes to apologise to any supporters who felt offended by the speculation, while reiterating the player's commitment.
The situation introduces fresh uncertainty around a key player who was signed for a British record fee from Benfica in January 2023. His first full season has been a challenging one for the club, which has struggled for consistency in the Premier League. This internal disciplinary matter comes at a critical juncture in Chelsea's season as they compete on multiple fronts.
The immediate implication is a significant midfield reshuffle for Rosenior in two important matches. In the longer term, the public dispute between the player's representative and the club raises questions about the harmony within the squad and Fernández's long-term future, despite the recent contract discussions.
