Chelsea have confirmed that Samantha Kerr will leave the club at the end of her contract this summer, bringing an end to a hugely successful six-and-a-half-year spell. The Australian international, 32, arrived at the Blues in late 2019 and quickly established herself as a pivotal figure, becoming the club’s all-time leading league goalscorer with 115 goals in 157 matches. Her departure marks the end of a significant chapter in English women’s football.
Kerr’s time at Chelsea has been laden with silverware, securing five Women’s Super League titles, three FA Cups, and two League Cups. The forward’s impact extended beyond goals, as she became a symbol of the club’s growing dominance in the women’s game. Before her final appearance against Manchester United on Saturday, Kerr expressed her gratitude, stating she was “simply happy” reflecting on her Chelsea career and the trophies won during her time with the club.
Having earned 122 caps for Australia, scoring 64 goals, Kerr’s international career continues alongside her club future. She was a runner-up in the 2023 Ballon d’Or France Football awards, acknowledging her status as one of the world’s premier strikers. However, a significant setback occurred in January 2024 when she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture, sidelining her for almost twenty months.
Kerr demonstrated her resilience by returning to action this season, scoring 16 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions. Despite the injury, she remained a potent threat and a key player for Chelsea. Her departure leaves a void in the Chelsea attack, but also opens up a new opportunity for the forward to explore other challenges in her career. The club has not yet announced any potential replacement for the prolific striker, but will likely seek to fill the gap left by her departure.
