Despite the reduction, Chelsea still maintains the largest squad in the Premier League, marginally ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s 37 players, while the league average stands at 29.4. The changes suggest a shift in strategy from owner Todd Boehly, who has seemingly curtailed recent spending.
The club is facing a congested squad in multiple positions, notably with five goalkeepers competing for playing time. Several players across the pitch may find opportunities limited, with competition particularly fierce in attacking areas where Chelsea currently have four senior forwards. The club is also reportedly set to add Dastan Satpaev to their ranks, further increasing the need for player departures.
Chelsea’s reduced squad size is partly dictated by their absence from European competition this season and Premier League regulations that limit clubs to registering 25 players. This creates a pressing need to find clubs for surplus players before the transfer window closes.
