Chelsea have given the go-ahead for the permanent sale of winger Alejandro Garnacho, a move that could significantly benefit Manchester United through a pre-existing sell-on clause. The news comes as United seek to bolster their midfield options, having been priced out of moves for several targets including Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, and Elliot Anderson.
Garnacho completed a £40 million move to Stamford Bridge from Manchester United last summer, a transfer the Argentine reportedly pushed for despite difficult negotiations. United, while accepting the fee, negotiated a 10 percent sell-on clause, which could now yield an additional £4 million windfall should Chelsea find a buyer. This potential income is particularly timely for United, who are pursuing Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni, valued at €100 million (£86 million), and are planning further midfield reinforcements.
Reports from Football London indicate Chelsea are only considering permanent offers for the 22-year-old, dismissing potential loan bids, particularly from Serie A side Roma. This stance is crucial for United, as a loan deal would not trigger the sell-on clause. Reporter Ben Jacobs has corroborated the information, stating that “a number of teams are interested” in acquiring Garnacho.
While no official dialogue has begun between Chelsea and potential buyers, the club’s willingness to sell Garnacho represents a shift in strategy after the player failed to establish himself as a regular starter during his debut season. The sale would free up funds for Chelsea to pursue other targets, while simultaneously providing United with a financial boost in a competitive transfer market. This financial flexibility will be valuable as United continue to pursue Tchouameni and other midfield options this summer.
