Chelsea are not planning a summer move for Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz, despite links to incoming manager Xabi Alonso, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The news comes after speculation that Alonso, who worked with Wirtz at Bayer Leverkusen, might attempt to bring the player to Stamford Bridge when he officially takes over on July 1.
Alonso and Wirtz enjoyed success together in Germany, winning the Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season, fueling reports of a potential reunion in London. However, Romano stated on his YouTube channel that there have been “no negotiations, no talks” between the two clubs regarding Wirtz.
Liverpool have consistently maintained they have no intention of selling Wirtz, with sources at Anfield indicating the club are pleased with his progress since joining. Transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported last week that the club views Wirtz as a key part of their future plans, despite a challenging initial adaptation period following his arrival. Bailey stated the club has “absolutely” received no offers for the player, even from previous suitors like Bayern Munich.
Romano echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that Liverpool “absolutely believe” in Wirtz and anticipate next season being a breakthrough year for him. He dismissed the links as unfounded, urging fans to “forget about those links coming from England.” The player himself appears settled at Liverpool, and the club are keen to see him develop into a key component of their midfield.
This development confirms Liverpool’s commitment to retaining Wirtz, solidifying their midfield options for the upcoming season and potentially frustrating any aspirations Alonso may have had of reuniting with a former protégé. The club’s stance suggests a long-term vision for the player, despite initial adaptation difficulties.
