Liverpool winger Federico Chiesa is reportedly willing to take a significant pay cut in order to facilitate a move away from Anfield this summer. According to a report from Italian outlet Calciomercato, the 28-year-old Italy international is keen to return to Serie A and would lower his current salary, which is estimated to be around €6-€6.5 million per year, to make a transfer happen.
Chiesa arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2024 in a deal worth an initial £10 million, with a further £2.5 million in potential add-ons, as the first signing of the Arne Slot era. The move was hailed as a potential bargain for a player of his calibre, but his time on Merseyside has been hampered by injuries and intense competition for places in the forward line. To date, he has managed only 48 appearances for the club, contributing five goals and five assists.
The winger's limited impact is underscored by his solitary Premier League start this season, a stark contrast to the expectations that accompanied his arrival from Juventus. Despite being under contract until 2028, the report suggests Chiesa is now determined to sever ties with the Premier League champions. His desire for a fresh start is said to be so strong that he is prepared to make a financial sacrifice, a clear indication of his intent to leave.
This development comes amid a period of potential transition at Liverpool. While manager Arne Slot retains the backing of the club's ownership, Fenway Sports Group, the squad is expected to see some changes following a season that has fallen short of expectations. The situation with Chiesa highlights the challenges of integrating a player who has struggled for consistent fitness and form, despite his proven quality at the international level with Italy.
Furthermore, Chiesa is not the only Liverpool player whose future is under scrutiny. According to separate reports from transfer insider Graeme Bailey, midfielder Curtis Jones is also attracting interest. The academy graduate, whose contract expires in 2027, is reportedly being monitored by Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Serie A champions Inter Milan. Fabrizio Romano noted on his podcast that contract talks between Jones and Liverpool are currently on standby, opening the door for a potential summer departure.
The potential exits of both Chiesa and Jones would signal a reshaping of Slot's attacking and midfield options. For Chiesa, a return to Italy could offer the regular playing time needed to reignite his career ahead of the 2026 World Cup. For Liverpool, moving on a player who has not settled could free up resources and a squad place for a more suitable reinforcement, as Slot looks to build a team capable of challenging on all fronts next season.
