Cristian Chivu is set to sign a contract extension with Inter Milan through 2028, the club confirmed, solidifying his position as manager and aligning with the club’s policy of avoiding expiring contracts. The agreement comes after a successful season where Chivu led Inter to a Serie A and Coppa Italia double, a feat last achieved by José Mourinho. As a result of this success, Chivu’s salary will increase from €2 million to €3 million per year, plus bonuses.
This extension signals Inter’s intent to build a long-term project under Chivu, who previously served in a coaching capacity within the club. The positive results have also encouraged the ownership, Oaktree, to back a significant summer transfer window aimed at strengthening the squad for a return to Champions League contention. Inter has allocated an initial budget of €50 million, which will be supplemented by funds generated from player sales.
Chivu has embraced the existing 3-5-2 system that proved successful under previous manager Antonio Conte, rejecting initial considerations of switching to a back four. The attacking quartet of Lautaro Martínez and others are expected to remain intact, allowing the club to focus its financial resources on reinforcing midfield and defense. The club’s performance in the Champions League qualifying rounds last season, which resulted in elimination, is a key area for improvement.
Inter have identified Manu Koné of Roma as a primary transfer target, recognizing the financial pressures on Roma’s ownership group to generate revenue through player sales. The initial asking price of €50 million is considered high, but negotiations are ongoing. Curtis Jones of Liverpool, whose contract expires in 2027, is another midfield target, with personal terms reportedly agreed. In defense, Inter are monitoring Muharemovic of Sassuolo and Solet of Udinese, dependent on potential departures of Bastoni or Bisseck. They are also seeking an experienced backup goalkeeper, with Kepa Arrizabalaga of Arsenal among the candidates. The club is also considering options for the right-back position, including Marco Palestra from Atalanta, although a deal will depend on Atalanta's willingness to negotiate.
