Cristian Chivu has extended his contract as Inter Milan’s assistant manager through 2028, the club confirmed following a meeting with CEO Beppe Marotta, sporting director Piero Ausilio, and other club officials. The new agreement reflects the significant faith Inter has in Chivu, with Marotta stating that the Romanian will remain at the club even longer than his own tenure. The deal will see Chivu’s salary rise to €3 million per season.
Chivu joined Inter as a player in 2007, becoming a key part of the team that won the historic treble in 2010 under Jose Mourinho. After retiring in 2014, he transitioned into coaching, initially within Inter’s youth system. He took charge of the Primavera team, leading them to a Scudetto in 2022, a victory he recalls as particularly emotional, marking his first trophy as a coach. This success paved the way for his promotion to Simone Inzaghi’s first-team staff.
Following Inter’s Serie A title win against Lazio, Chivu referenced the film “L’allenatore nel pallone”, acknowledging the rollercoaster of emotions and expectations that come with managing a club like Inter. He admitted to feeling like a “second choice” and an “intern” earlier in the season, expressing concern over negative press coverage affecting his daughters, Anastasia and Natalia, and apologized on behalf of those responsible.
Chivu’s dedication to player development and his focus on fostering a positive environment have been praised within the club. He prioritizes giving young players opportunities and maximizing their potential, qualities he demonstrated during his time with the Primavera squad. Inter currently aims to reach 120 goals for the season and see captain Lautaro Martinez reach 20 goals, with the team having already scored 115. The extension of Chivu’s contract signals Inter’s commitment to building a stable and successful future, both on and off the pitch.
