Cristian Chivu has agreed to a contract extension with Inter Milan, extending his tenure as the club’s manager until 2028, according to reports from Italian news outlet Inter. The deal, finalized with the presence of Chivu’s agent Pietro Chiodi at the club’s headquarters, represents a significant show of faith in the Romanian coach following a successful debut season.
The extension moves the expiration date of Chivu’s contract from 2027 to 2028, without including any further renewal options or release clauses. The new agreement also includes a substantial increase to Chivu’s salary, raising it from a current net income of €2 million to approximately €3 million annually. This reflects Inter’s appreciation for his achievements and their desire to retain him for the long term.
Chivu took the reins at Inter ahead of the 2023-24 season, leading the Nerazzurri to a remarkable double of Serie A and Coppa Italia titles. His tactical acumen and ability to galvanize the squad quickly established him as a highly-regarded manager in Italian football. Prior to his appointment as Inter manager, Chivu had served as a member of the club’s coaching staff, gaining valuable experience within the organization.
Following a short break in Capri, where he met with Inter’s sporting director Piero Ausilio, Chivu is expected to formally sign the contract in the coming days. The swift resolution of the negotiations underscores the mutual desire of both parties to continue their working relationship. This extension provides Inter with stability at the managerial position as they aim to build upon their recent successes and compete for further honors. The club will now focus on building a squad capable of challenging for both domestic and European titles under Chivu’s leadership.
