Christophe Galtier reveals he turned down Marseille approach after PSG exit
Former Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier has confirmed he was approached by Olympique de Marseille last summer, but chose to reject the offer due to poor timing and his ongoing legal troubles. In an interview with Le Figaro, the 57-year-old coach, who was born in Marseille and played for the club, stated the opportunity arose shortly after his departure from PSG but that he preferred to decline.
Galtier explained that the approach from Marseille came at a difficult moment, as he was facing accusations of moral harassment and discrimination from his time at Nice, a case that later led to a trial. He was acquitted of the charges in December. The former Lille and Nice coach suggested the legal cloud hanging over him at the time made the move untenable. "I was approached by OM after Paris, I preferred to say no," Galtier said, according to the interview.
Since leaving PSG after one season, Galtier has been working in Saudi Arabia as the head coach of Al-Duhail, based in Neom. Despite turning down his boyhood club, he has not ruled out a future return to the Stade Vélodrome. "Will it come up again? I don't know..." he said. This admission comes amid a period of instability at Marseille, where current manager Jean-Louis Gasset is the club's fourth permanent head coach since the start of the 2023-24 season.
The revelation highlights the complex dynamics of one of French football's most intense rivalries, with a figure deeply connected to Marseille having recently managed their arch-rivals PSG. Galtier's PSG won the Ligue 1 title in 2023 but his tenure was cut short after failing to meet European expectations. His prior success, notably leading Lille to a shock league title over PSG in 2021, had made him a coveted figure.
For Marseille, the episode underscores the chaotic search for leadership they have endured. The club's presidential change from Pablo Longoria to Medhi Benatia last year has been followed by a revolving door of managers. Galtier's candidacy would have represented a sentimental and potentially stabilizing appointment, given his deep roots in the city, but the circumstances proved insurmountable.
With Galtier now under contract in the Middle East and Marseille focused on securing Champions League qualification under Gasset, an immediate reunion seems unlikely. However, his public comments leave the door ajar for a potential emotional homecoming in the future, should the timing and conditions ever align for both parties.
