Manchester City are preparing to begin negotiations with Josko Gvardiol over a new contract, according to TEAMtalk. The move comes in response to reported interest from both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the Croatian defender.
Gvardiol has become a key player for Pep Guardiola since joining from RB Leipzig in 2023, establishing himself as a consistent performer in the Premier League. City’s sporting director, Hugo Viana, is currently undertaking a review of squad planning, and securing Gvardiol’s long-term future is now a priority, following progress on a new deal for Phil Foden.
Both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are known to be seeking left-sided defensive reinforcements, and have contacted Gvardiol’s representatives to gauge his situation at the Etihad Stadium. The 24-year-old’s versatility and ability to perform at the highest level have made him an attractive target for both European giants.
Despite the external interest, Manchester City are reportedly confident that Gvardiol is happy with his current situation and anticipate positive progress in contract discussions. The club are aware of the attention from Madrid and Bayern, but believe a new agreement will solidify his position. Gvardiol is currently recovering from a fractured leg injury sustained earlier in the year, but is expected to return before the end of the season and participate in the summer’s World Cup finals with Croatia.
Guardiola recently stated he has “no info” regarding Gvardiol’s future, but expressed his desire for the player to remain at the club, acknowledging the difficulty in finding a player of his quality. City now aim to reward Gvardiol’s progress with an improved contract, strengthening their position against the advances from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
