Jonathan Clauss has revealed details surrounding his departure from Olympique de Marseille in 2024, citing a breakdown in relations with the club’s management. Speaking with beIN Sport, the right-back described a series of alleged falsehoods that contributed to his move to Nice.
Clauss’s issues reportedly began following the arrival of Medhi Benatia within the Marseille board. He claims to have directly expressed concerns to Benatia regarding the managerial situation with Gennaro Gattuso, stating he believed they would struggle to achieve positive results under the Italian coach. This proactive attempt to address issues, according to Clauss, was not well received.
The player also addressed rumours surrounding a perceived feigned injury during a match against Monaco. He stated that accusations he fabricated the injury were deeply upsetting and damaged his reputation amongst supporters. Clauss maintains his injury was genuine and expressed confusion over the negative reaction at the time.
Despite the difficulties with club officials, Clauss acknowledged receiving support from his teammates, specifically highlighting the efforts of then-captain Valentin Rongier, who he said “fought” to allow him to finish the season with the club. He expressed regret over the manner of his departure, emphasizing he did not believe he was solely responsible for the situation.
Clauss joined Nice in the summer transfer window, seeking a fresh start after a turbulent period at Marseille. He had become a key player for Marseille following his arrival from Lens in 2022, providing both defensive solidity and attacking threat from the right flank. His departure leaves a void in the Marseille squad, while bolstering the options available to Nice manager Francesco Farioli. The move allows Clauss to continue playing in Ligue 1, avoiding a potential transfer abroad.
The details of the transfer fee were not disclosed by either club, but the move represents a significant acquisition for Nice as they look to establish themselves as a force in French football. This transfer could potentially signal a shift in Marseille’s squad dynamic as they navigate a period of change under new leadership.
